The Series’ Season 4 News, Date, and Cast
Real ones know that Disney+ doesn’t just have Marvel and Star Wars. Families and Disney adults alike have been enjoying season 1, season 2, and season 3 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a totally charming YA series once you get past all the excessive punctuation. The show was Olivia Rodrigo’s pre–“Drivers License” breakout (and pre–“Drivers License” breakup), so the world really owes fans a thank-you, IMHO. Is the show that put the singer-songwriter and It Girl on the map coming back for more? Here’s what East High Drama Club has in store.
First things first, *has* High School Musical: The Musical: The Series been renewed for season 4?
Yes! The series was renewed for a fourth season ahead of the third.
Will Olivia Rodrigo be back in season 4?
Probably not, TBH, but she might have a cameo. The actor/songwriting overnight sensation has a scaled-back role in season 3, which is already being called her character’s send-off, according to Entertainment Weekly—so I think she’s pretty much done.
What (and who) will season 4 be about?
Because season 3 took place over summer break, season 4 will be about fall semester of the next year and whatever Miss Jenn has the Drama Club doing. What year is that, you ask, for many of our East High Drama Club? Senior year, baby! Ricky, Kortney, Big Red will all be seniors—as will Nini, if we do see her at all. EJ, as you may remember, technically graduated already. That said, Carlos, Seb, Ashlyn, and Gina will all be juniors in season 4, and there are some characters from season 3 who could also join.
Kylie Cantrall, Matthew Sato, Caitlin Reilly and Vasthy Mompoint are all joining the cast as newbies. Kylie Cantrall is playing social media star Dani. Matthew Sato plays sitcom actor Mack. Caitlin Reilly is an indie film director named Quinn. Vasthy Mompoint is playing Krystal, a choreographer.
No, I mean which *musical* will they do in season 4?
Because it’s senior year, it only makes sense that they do High School Musical 3: Senior Year! And yes, that’s the official musical that they’re doing.
Announced at D23, “In season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, after an epic summer at Camp Shallow Lake, the Wildcats return to East High, where they will prepare to put on a stage production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year. On their first day back, the principal announces that Disney has decided to make the long-awaited High School Musical 4: The Reunion movie on location at their beloved high school, and our Wildcats will be playing featured extras in the movie. It’s season 4, and it’s now or never.”
But even with this being the official pick, there’s always a chance that we’ll see some songs from other musicals from the House of Mouse. (It is a Disney+ series, after all, so, like…I get it.)
So wait, are OG High School Musical cast members actually reuniting?
Yes, they are! Disney revealed in a special announcement that Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh will all be back playing themselves this season. Corbin, Lucas, and Kaycee are all back after previously appearing in earlier seasons of the show.
As for Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens? They were both spotted back at East High recently and posted some pics of their trip. However, that doesn’t mean they were back as part of season 4.
“I’m going to chalk that up to being a remarkable coincidence, but we’d love to get Zac and Vanessa and all of them back, so we’re actively working on that right now,” creator Tim Federle told TVLine.
Zac and Vanessa, if you’re reading this, please make a trip back to East High ASAP!
When will HSM:TM:TS be back for season 4?
This is probably one of the hardest things to predict, TBH. Season 1 aired on Disney+ between November 2019 and January 2020. Season 2 followed between May 2021 and July 2021, and season 3 got here a year later, airing between July 2022 and September 2022. It has hit every season. I would think that if it takes about a year to make, the new season will premiere in the fall of 2023. But who knows?!
