Michael Cohen received encouraging texts from a new friend and fellow Donald Trump enemy while testifying in the former president’s hush money trial in Manhattan.

Cohen received words of encouragement from none other than Rosie O’Donnell, the actress and comedian Trump has feuded with for years. The former president would often throw personal insults O’Donnell’s way, and she’s been criticizing him long before he ever entered the political arena. Trump was even threatening to sue O’Donnell when she was a co-host on The View in 2006 after she attacked him on air.

Jacob Bernstein of The New York Times spoke to O’Donnell at length about her relationship with Cohen, which she said began in 2019 after she reached out to him while he was serving a prison sentence for tax fraud and campaign finance violations. O’Donnell eventually drove to West Virginia to see Cohen and what was supposed to be a one hour visit turned into a six hour visit where at one point the two held hands.

“When someone is in a relationship that unhealthy and breaks free, it’s a very lonely time,” O’Donnell said.

She was previously the first guest on Cohen’s Mea Culpa podcast, and the two had dinner in December. On Monday, as Cohen was facing the start of his testimony, O’Donnell texted him “breathe – relax – tell the truth – u got this – i love u.”

“Thank you and truly love you,” Cohen replied after O’Donnell told him he was doing “great.”

She later told him he hit a “home run.”

Cohen claimed he was behind some of the personal jabs Trump would throw O’Donnell’s way, saying he was part of the “brain trust” behind Trump’s Twitter account where he would regularly troll his political enemies and critical celebrities.

O’Donnell said she’s now in “regular” contact with Cohen.

“I know this has been a tumultuous time, so I check in. It’s a big thing to be in a position to be able to change the whole country in some way,” she said.
