One-year-old baby survives two days beside highway near Louisiana-Texas border during Hurricane Beryl

A one-year-old baby has survived two days in a ditch beside a highway near the Louisiana and Texas border during a hurricane.

A truck driver found the baby boy on the Interstate 10 East near Vinton, a few kilometres where the body of his four-year-old brother was found in a lake.

Detectives investigating the four-year-old’s death learned he was last seen with his mother and one-year-old sibling on Saturday.

Fearing the baby was also dead, police were preparing to search the lake and surrounds when a truck driver called 911, alerting them to a baby on the roadside.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Gary “Stitch” Guillory said the baby had a few insect bites, but otherwise seemed well.

He said it was a “miracle” the child was unharmed during Hurricane Beryl that struck east Texas early on Monday.

Heavy rain and strong winds have left a trail of destruction across Caribbean and US Gulf Coast.

At least three people have died in Texas during the storm.

“This kid spent two days out in the weather on the side of the highway,” Guillory said while becoming emotional.

“Thank God that trucker seen him. When you look at the video, here he was, you know, crawling toward the highway.

“We look at this one-year-old as our miracle baby because he was still alive.”

The children’s mother, 25-year-old Aaliyah Jack of Lake Charles, has been charged with failing to report a missing child.
