Anas Sarwar slams Labour lord over post linking Humza Yousaf & wife to Hamas terrorists

ANAS Sarwar attacked a Labour peer for “childish and prejudiced” and “shock jock” tweets after he was accused of “sexism” and Islamophobia.

The Labour Muslim Network demanded an apology from George Foulkes for reposting a tweet linking the First Minister to the terrorist group Hamas.

Lord Foulkes refused to apologise and claimed he had been making a “political point”, despite deleting it when others said it could be viewed as being about race.

The peer also said Humza Yousaf’s policy was set by his wife, Nadia Al-Nakla, whose family dramatically escaped Gaza amid the Israeli attacks on the region earlier this year.

The SNP said the now-deleted tweet was “sexist” and demanded Labour take “serious action” to discipline the parly veteran.

In the now deleted tweet which picture Mr Yousaf and Hamas terrorists, Lord Foulkes said: “It appears that Humza Yousaf’s policy is determined by Nadia Al-Nakla”, referring to Mr Yousaf’s wife.

The SNP has been a fierce critic of the war in the region and has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire.

Scottish Labour leader Mr Sarwar said he would speak to the peer about the tweet and attacked it for “shock jock” tactics.

He said: “People have got to be really really careful and use their common sense and not fall into childish and prejudiced tweets or other posts as well.

“It’s far too serious an issue to be doing that kind of thing on social media.

“A serving peer should be even more cautious than that.

“I hope he has learnt a lesson from it and I hope he will reflect on the impact that will have had on a family going through absolute hardship right now.”

The Labour Muslim Network said it had written to the peer demanding an apology.

They said: “We have seen the sharp rise of Islamophobia across Britain over the past months.

“It is more important than ever that public officials lead by example.”
The SNP also slammed the peer for the post.

“Labour’s George Foulkes managed to add a layer of sexism to his promotion of an Islamophobic tweet,” they said.

Lord Foulkes defended the post and rejected the criticism from his party leader.

He claimed he was making a “political point” and deleted it when others said it “could be interpreted as race”.

The peer added: “None of it compares with the horrible abuse that I’ve suffered on X or Twitter, personal abuse from cybernats that I’ve taken on the chin without complaining and seeking to delete them but I do understand that other people are more sensitive to it.”
