Canada Updated Rules For International Students: The Government of Canada has updated the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) policy for graduates of master’s degree programs for international students. Sharing a post on X(formally Twitter), the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) wrote,” Effective February 15, 2024, changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) for graduates of master’s degree programs will come into force. In recognition that graduates of master’s degree programs are excellent candidates to succeed in Canada’s labour market and potentially transition to permanent residence, you could be eligible for a 3-year PGWP even if the length of their study program may have been less than two years.”

In other words, the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has announced that graduates of master’s degree programs in Canada will now be eligible for a three-year PGWP, even if their program duration was less than two years. This updated policy has come into effect from February 15, 2024.

‘You can apply for a 3-year PGWP, even if the length of your master’s degree was less than 2 years, as long as you meet all other eligibility criteria (e.g., the program must have been a minimum of 8 months),’ reads the official website. For more details, visit the official website of IRCC.

How to apply for a post-graduation work permit?

As per the official website, eligible candidates can apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) from inside Canada or from another country, as long as they’re eligible.

  • He/She have up to 180 days after you graduate to apply for a PGWP.

When you apply, you must confirm the following:

  • that you attended and completed your program
  • the name of your program and
  • the length of your program

You can confirm these by submitting any of the following:

  • your degree or diploma
  • your transcript or an official letter from your school
  • If your study permit will expire before you get your marks, you have 2 options. You can apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer or leave Canada and apply for your PGWP.

Speaking of international students, an Indian student named Shaik Muzammil Ahmed died of cardiac arrest in Canada after which his family has requested External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to arrange for the student’s mortal remains to be sent back to Hyderabad. Ahmed (25) belonged to Hyderabad and was pursuing Masters in IT from Conestoga College, Waterloo Campus in Kitchener City, Ontario.
