Maida Vale Lego hobbyist Ben McCullock creates Anzac statue to pay respects

A Lego enthusiast has spent five months honouring the Anzacs, with a unique 18,000-piece sculpture at his Perth Hills home.

Ben McCullock is the Lego hobbyist behind the two-metre creation in Maida Vale which he started building last year.

Made using around 18 thousand Lego bricks, the sculpture replicates an Anzac Memorial statue with a soldier standing in a bed of red poppies in front of a white cross that reads “lest we forget”.

Mr McCullock, who has been building and designing his own large scale Lego creations for 10 years, decided to use his skills to make a difference.

“I had been to many dawn services over the years and saw the statues all around WA and thought it would be good to make something to pay homage to those who have served, Mr McCullock said.

“I have a lot of friends from the services, who struggling with life as a civilian and the love of Lego with these friends breaks down some barriers and allows them to talk.”

Majority of the build was done by Mr McCullock, but he got the family involved to help pull off the challenging feat.

His daughter built the poppies and his son helped construct the bases.

The impressive build is already loved by many Western Australians who saw Mr McCullock’s creation on the Lego Show Off Facebook Page.

One Facebook user said: “Absolutely awesome. We will remember them.”

“Absolutely amazing! This is by far one of my favourite MOCs I’ve seen. Impressive build, wonderful respect shown, you should be really proud of this one!” another Facebook user said.

“I hope everyone enjoys the build and opens up conversations with people from all over as sometimes it’s just the ice breaker people need to open up and talk.”
