Moment Sydney rental goes up in flames during inspection

A Sydney rental has gone up in flames during an open-home inspection.

A woman inspecting the property, in the city’s North Shore, detailed the moment the house caught fire.

She attended an open-home for the three-bedroom property on Bent St in Lindfield about 9.30am on Saturday morning.

During the inspection, the woman said one prospective tenant turned on the lights in the bathroom, which sent sparks flying.

Fire and Rescue NSW said they arrived at the home as smoke was billowing from the roof.

“A search of the house confirmed that the house was vacant,” a Fire and Rescue spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

The fire was extinguished about 10am that morning. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.

The woman shared images on social media of the home after it became engulfed in flames, and said she was shaken after the ordeal.

Other renters on social media were shocked, but equally not surprised, given the diabolical state of Australia’s renting crisis.

“Take it as a positive that it happened now before anyone moved into the house,” one person said.

“That’s absolutely crazy,” another said.

However, others added while the ordeal is scary, it could potentially happen at any property due to a number of faults.

“Electrical faults do occasionally happen, which is a great reason for everyone to have insurance,” one person said.
