A batch of much-needed rain is set to slightly replenish some of WA’s dams as water supplies dwindle in parts of the State.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts there will be a high chance of showers and even the chance of a thunderstorm on Tuesday and Wednesday in Perth.
Residents can expect up to 15mm of rainfall on Tuesday and 4mm on Wednesday.
According to the Water Corporation, Perth has only received 1.2mm of rain in April this year. The city’s average rainfall total for April is just over 36mm.
So far this year, Perth has only received 10.8mm of rain — making slow progress towards the average rainfall total of 556.8mm the city had last year.
And it shows, with Perth’s metro’s dam levels down almost 20 per cent from last year.
The forecasted rain will be a welcome relief for our hearty farmers, who are on edge as dams are on the brink of running dry.
Water levels in the Glen Mervyn Dam, 200 kilometres south of Perth, have dropped by more than 90 per cent over the past year to sit at just 0.04 gigalitres, according to Water Corporation.
However, there may be some relief, as there is a very high chance of showers and thunderstorms for Albany, the southwest land division, southern Gascoyne, southwestern Goldfields, and western Eucla.
Albany is predicted to receive up to 20mm of rain on Wednesday but will dry out again by the weekend.
South West farmers Tristan and Fleur Mead saw only 72.7mm of rainfall from October to March, making it the driest period for the region in 51 years, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Mr Mead said they had only got 3mm of rain in 2024, compared to between 40mm and 80mm during the same period in a typical year.
