Xabi Alonso? Julian Nagelsmann? Mikel Arteta perhaps? Well, Ruben Amorim it is.

It seems as if the burning question of who will replace Jurgen Klopp after his departure that has plagued Liverpool fans lately may have been answered, as latest reports from Sky Germany state that Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool to take over the head coach role after Klopp’s exit.

It has been reported that Amorim, who currently has a contract with Sporting till 2026 with a release clause of £25m, will be looking to sign off on a three-year deal that will keep him in Anfield till 2027.

The 39-year-old has also been a name that has made the rumours lately, not just for Liverpool but all over Europe with the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and others having scouted out Amorim as a potential manger for their own clubs as well.

Liverpool have been on the lookout for more managerial options themselves, with the most notoriously pursued one having been that of former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder, Xabi Alonso.

Alonso has a rich history with Livepool. The now-retired Spanish midfield maestro played for Liverpool from 2004-2009. During that time he made 143 league appearances and scored 14 goals, before finally departing or £32.5 million in 2009 for none other than Los Blancos Real Madrid.

But, it isn’t merely his playing career that touted him as a possible replacement. Alonso has also been proving his mettle as a transformative manager himself, leading Leverkusen to a record-breaking undefeated season so far, as Leverkusen lie one win away from clinching a historic first-ever Bundesliga title.

But, all hopes of Alonso signing on were diminished when the Spaniard announced recently that he planned on staying at Leverkusen for the near future stating the BayArena to be the ‘right place to develop as a coach’.

Amorim is no pushover either, as Sporting now lies at he top of the Portuguese First Division, four points clear of rivals Benfica with a game in hand as well.

Similar to what Alonso may just produce in Leverkusen, Sporting won the league under Amorim during his first full season in charge and the club have remained competitive ever since.
