Taiwan Earthquake Latest News: A massive earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale hit Taiwan’s eastern shores on Wednesday morning, the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed. “Notable quake, preliminary info: M 6.5 – 11 km NE of Hualien City, Taiwan,” said the USGS in a post on X. Notably, the strong tremor triggered tsunami alerts in southern Japan and Philippines.
Taiwan’s fire department said on Wednesday that so far one person had died and more than 50 were injured after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the island’s east coast, news agency Reuters reported.
The Central News Agency reported that the epicentre of the temblor was located in the Pacific Ocean, 25.0 kilometres south-southeast of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 15.5 km.

Because of the strong tremor, power outage was reported in several parts of the city, according to a Reuters. Soon after the earthquake hit, a tsunami alert was issued in Japan.
Because of the earthquake, Tsunami waves as high as three metres (10 feet) were expected immediately for remote Japanese islands in the region, including Miyakojima island, the agency said.
Strongest Tremor In 25 Years
This is the strongest tremor that hit Taiwan in 25 years. Notably, this island nation is regularly hit by earthquakes because the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.
Another 7.6-magnitude jolt hit Taiwan in September 1999, killing around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history.
On the other hand, Japan experiences around 1,500 jolts every year.

The massive earthquake toppled several buildings in Taiwan’s Hualien city, while train services were suspended across the country. In the meantime, options have been given to schools and government offices to cancel classes and work.
