Thieves captured on camera taking Baldivis boy with muscular dystrophy’s mobility scooter

A Baldivis mum of four has labelled thieves “scum” after the theft of her 11-year-old’s mobility scooter.

Michelle Jones’ son Joshua has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which means his muscles will progressively become weaker.

People with DMD eventually begin using a wheelchair to get around.

In the meantime, Joshua, who is in year seven, relies on his mobility scooter.

“So it’s for him to get around long distance because he’s getting weaker and weaker and he really needs it,” Michelle said.

“He’s probably going to need to start using it at school as he’s going to go longer distances and not just in the one classroom.”

A video of the theft captured on Michelle’s doorbell camera shows a man wearing a hat and hooded jumper approach the house.

When he notices the camera, he turns around and pulls the hood up to conceal his face.

The cocky thief then returns to the front of the house, lifts the scooter and carries it to a waiting white ute.

The whole process was so smooth that Michelle says her dogs didn’t bark.

“I thought they would have gone nuts, but then the next day. . . the scooter’s gone,” she said.

“They just lifted the whole thing, I mean, it’s so heavy. . . I don’t know how they did it.”

Michelle supplied the footage to the police but was told it wasn’t clear enough to identify the person.

“I feel a bit violated, someone’s been on the property and we can’t leave anything out now,” she said.
